MOXIBUSTION
Moxibustion is an ancient Chinese Medicine technique in which dried plant materials, called “moxa” or dried mugwort, are burned near the surface of the skin in order to facilitate healing. It aids in stimulating a sluggish, deficient, or stagnated Qi (energy) with the introduction of therapeutic heat, amplifying the effects of acupuncture therapy and alleviating chronic stagnation. The warming properties of moxibustion invigorate the flow of Qi in the body, strengthen the blood, and maintain general health by dispelling pathogenic influences.
IS MOXIBUSTION FOR ME?
Moxibustion used in conjunction with acupuncture can help to alleviate a variety of symptoms and conditions due to its effectiveness in increasing blood circulation, tonifying the energy, stimulating the digestive function, and boosting the immune system. Ask your acupuncturist for more details if you are seeking relief from:
- Pain due to injury or arthritis (especially those associated with “cold” patterns where pain is diminished with heat application)
- Digestive problems, irregular elimination, fluid retention
- Gynecological or obstetrical conditions
- Cold and flu strain protection; lowered immunity
- Hypothyroidism
- Hypoglycemia
- Oversensitivity to cold
- Depression, low mood
WHAT TO EXPECT:
The effectiveness of acupuncture and moxibustion are amplified when used together in the same session. A smoldering moxa stick is situated over specific areas of the body, often corresponding with specific acupuncture points. The area reddens and you may feel a sudden flooding of warmth that quickly radiates along a specific pathway—this indicates the arrival of Qi and its ability to flow freely throughout the channel.
