What is Qi?

"Qi is the root of a human being. It is the basis of all phenomena in the universe."

-Giovanni Maciocia, The Foundations of Chinese Medicine

Qi is the essential component on which Traditional Chinese Medicine operates. It is the natural energy of life; the vital energy that keeps us alive and well. Qi, or energy, is the essential building block of everything around us and within us. The goal of TCM is to harmonize Qi in order to achieve optimal health and wellbeing, because the manipulation of this internal energy leads to healing.

Qi allows all of the systems of the body to communicate with each other. Without Qi, there would be no growth, no change, no life. It flows through the meridian pathways of the body, and each meridian has a corresponding internal organ. Qi transmits information to and among the body's vital organs and keeps the body in balance through regulating its functions-- from temperature, to hydration levels, to emotions.

The body remains healthy if Qi is able to flow and communicate freely throughout the entire body, maintaining the meridians and organs in a harmonious balance. If Qi is balanced, then the meridian system is operating well, which means the body is well and healthy. Blockages or imbalances within the meridian system result in stagnated Qi, eventually leading to dis-ease within the body. This further traumatizes the entire mind-body-spirit spectrum that is so critical to our well-being.

Qi is stimulated through acupuncture, acupressure, foods, herbs, Qigong, meditation, etc. which all work to restore balance to the system and achieve overall health and well-being.

After an acupuncture treatment, people often feel euphoric, relaxed, and energized-- this is the work of Qi. Utilizing acupuncture for well-being can help one find their purpose or new sources of happiness as their vital energy and overall view of life is enhanced in the absence of dis-ease.
